So just what is ‘freelancing’? Freelancing is described as Doing specific work for clients without committing to full-time employment. 

 

Freelancers often take on multiple projects with different clients simultaneously. As a freelancer you are classed as self-employed.

Freelancers handle contract work on a part-time or full-time basis and often sign agreements before starting projects.

With freelancing, the client pays per project, per task, or per hour, depending on the agreement. Freelance projects typically involve short-term assignments, although satisfied clients often request follow-on work. Most freelance jobs are available in the skills, service, and creative sectors, such as copywriting, programming, engineering, and marketing.’

In this article I list the top five freelance platforms that you should consider if you think you’d like to offer your services as a freelancer.

1. Upwork Inc

The full name for Upwork is Upwork Global Inc and was formerly known as Elance-oDesk. It is headquartered in Santa Clara, San Francisco and was established in 2013. Company turnover is more than $373.6 million per year.

Upwork is free to join. Once your profile is complete you can search for work and create projects. Upwork charges a 10% commission fee for all contracts with clients.

2. Fiverr

Fiverr is an Israeli based multi-national freelance service founded in Tel Aviv-Yafo by Sharon Lee Thony. The unique term for a service offered by a seller on Fiverr is called a ‘Gig.’ When creating Gigs, sellers can choose their starting price point. Sellers can take this a step further and offer Gig Packages to buyers by using Gig Packages. These contain multiple price ranges and sellers can offer buyers various and tailored service packages. In this way, buyers can pick and choose from all that’s offered according to their particular requirements.

3. Toptal

Toptal is a global remote company that provides a freelancing platform, connecting businesses with software engineers, designers, finance experts, product managers, and project managers. The company has no headquarters. Toptal is the abbreviation of Top Talent because the company has a policy of rigorous screening to ensure only the best in their field are accepted on to the platform. Toptal is also recognised as the world’s largest fully remote company.

It’s free to apply. To get hired at Toptal, freelancers must pass a series of exams, including language tests, skill reviews, a live screening, and test projects.

4. People Perhour

PeoplePerHour, legally People Per Hour Limited, is a UK-based company whose function is as an online platform giving businesses access to freelance workers. The company was founded in London in 2007.
Registration is free and similar to Upwork, you create a profile by filling all the mandatory fields and then start bidding for jobs.

People Perhour takes a 20% commission on contracts.
Unlike Upwork, however, People Perhour tends to have more entry level freelancers so good news if you’re still establishing yourself and honing your skills.

5. Guru.com

Guru.com is a freelance marketplace. It allows companies to find freelance workers for commissioned work. It was founded in 1998 and headquartered in Pittsburgh, USA.
Guru was initially known as eMoonlighter.com

Guru connects employers and freelancers through their online platform. Employers post job descriptions, including payment offered. Freelancers post profiles highlighting their skills and services. Employers can search for and invite specific freelancers to submit quotes for jobs, and freelancers who are interested in jobs can submit bids. Employers review the quotes received along with freelancers’ profiles, portfolios, feedback reviews, and earnings statistics before selecting freelancers to hire. Employers and freelancers form an agreement on the scope of work, payment terms, and timeline.
